Bullsbrook Farm, one of the historic host farms for this year’s Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend, offers visitors a unique journey into rural life across the centuries. Located in Dromore, near the scenic River Lagan, this mid-17th century farm is run by Roy McMurray, who inherited the property from his parents and has dedicated his life to preserving its remarkable history.
Roy’s love of history began early, he proudly recalls earning 100% in a school history test and this passion for the past shines through in every corner of Bullsbrook Farm. The period house, dating from 1700, has been lovingly restored, allowing visitors to see how rural dwellers once lived. Inside, an open fire still boasts the original crook and bellows, and a griddle remains ready for bread baking just as it would have been centuries ago. Nearby, two evergreens planted in 1885 stand as living witnesses to the farm’s long story.
The farm’s museum is a treasure trove of traditional rural life, filled with everything from old butter churns and hand-operated tools to vintage tractors, ploughs, and planters. Roy even points out the museum’s oldest item, a spit several hundred years old, offering a fascinating window into historic cooking practices. Visitors can also enjoy a charming little church Roy has created, full of character and quiet charm.
Bullsbrook Farm is not only rich in history but also in wildlife. Located in close proximity to the River Lagan, it is home to 38 species of birds, attracting nature enthusiasts and twitchers alike. The farm participates in the Countryside Management Scheme and maintains a small herd of beef cattle, making it a living example of traditional farming alongside natural conservation.
Fully accessible and all on one level, Bullsbrook Farm welcomes visitors year-round, with plenty of parking available. During Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend, June 12–14, Bullsbrook will be open to school groups on Friday, June 12, and to the general public on Saturday, June 13. Visitors will have the chance to step back in time, explore historic farm life, and discover the stories behind the objects, buildings, and land.
Experience history, nature, and rural heritage all in one visit at Bullsbrook Farm this Open Farm Weekend.
