April has been celebrated as the brewing and distilling month as part of the NI Year of Food and Drink campaign. This summer, not one but two Armagh apple orchard farms will open their gates to participate in Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend 2016.
Armagh Apple Farm have participated in each of our annual events since they began in 2012. Owner Helen Troughton believes it is a great initiative to let the public see where their food comes from: “We’ve really enjoyed taking part in each of the Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekends. The crowds have got bigger every year and it’s lovely to see so many more families come along and enjoy their day out. We look forward to the event this year given it is the Year of Food and Drink and as we celebrate our own 10th birthday. We will have lots of delicious apple juice for visitors to sample, as well as cider for those of legal age!”
Long Meadow Farm will be taking part in their first Bank of Ireland Open Farm Weekend this summer. Run by the McKeever family, the orchard has been in the family for three generations. They produce a range of ciders as well as pure apple juice. To find out more about their oak aged cider, watch this video with Long Meadow Farm owner Pat McKeever.

In 2012, the Armagh Bramley Apple became part of a premium food club when it was awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Status under the EU Protected Food Name Scheme. This status ensures that the Armagh Bramley Apple is ranked alongside the world’s premium protected food products – like Champagne and Parma Ham!
